Federal Government Slam Brakes on Texting Truckers
By: McClellan Law Firm
Posted: Dec 29, 2010
Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation issued a ban on texting by drivers of commercial vehicles, including large trucks and buses.
Said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a statement, “We want the drivers of big rigs and buses and those who share the roads with them to be safe. This is an important safety step and we will be taking more to eliminate the threat of distracted driving.”
Drivers of large trucks and buses who send or receive text messages on their cellphones while driving commercial vehicles may be subject to civil or criminal penalties of up to $2,750.
Last September, LaHood had announced he wanted to pursue this sort of regulatory policy, as well as additional rules of the road to diminish the impact of distracted driving on the nation’s motorists.
A number of recent studies have shown the dangers of texting while driving:
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration research shows drivers sending or receiving text messages take their eyes off of the road for an average of 4.6 seconds out of every 6 seconds while texting. This means that at 55 mph, the driver’s vehicle travels the length of a football field while the driver’s eyes are looking at the cellphone.
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that truckers who text are 23 times more likely to be in danger of crashing than non-texting drivers.
The Transport Research Laboratory found that texting while driving is riskier than driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The reaction times of the texting drivers were 35 percent slower; reaction times of drunk drivers were slowed 12 percent and the reaction times of drivers who had used marijuana were slowed 21 percent, according to the research.

Although the economy in California seems gloomy these days, the tides are slowly turning and with enough fiscal discipline by the state, recovery is on its way. Still, there are so many interesting career paths available for those who are entering college and here are some of the options you may want to take as you enter into college:
- Engineering and Science. This choice will always have job openings for you. These days, the bio technology field is on the lookout for new and fresh talent. Whether this be in research or project management, the bio-tech industry will always be clamoring for those who have the desire to find newer and better ways to sustain life through medicine. Engineering graduates will always find work, and the most progressive studies these days are of Environmental Engineering which is geared to finding ways to use renewable forms of power or create systems that are environmentally friendly.
- Law. No matter what, the legal profession will never fade away. Whether one becomes a divorce lawyer in Hollywood or a San Diego County DUI lawyer, this field of study will be there as long as contracts need to be made, disputes need to be settled, and people who are charged with crimes need to be defended.
- Medicine. Our need as a species to survive necessitates this field. As healers, doctors are often called for to do the impossible in certain situations. There are so many sub-specializations these days such as geriatric medicine, gastroenterology, nuclear medicine, oncology, neurology, pediatrics, and so on. With such progress in medicine and research, people are generally living longer lives or at the very least know what their ailments are.
- Law Enforcement and Security. Becoming a police officer or being in the military is a calling and one of the noblest of all professions. Being ready to defend the country with your life or keep the peace of the land by willing to taking risks are worthy acts to be commended. We need these brave men and women for us to sleep better at night, knowing that there are people who will defend our country and defend our citizenry.
- Educators. We live for our children and it is in the hands of our teachers when we are not available that our children grow and learn values and life lessons they may impart to their children as well. The base or template of our children are formed by us parents and developed by teachers who instil in them a sense of honesty, truth, and tolerance.
